Papua Expeditions

Authentic access. Real logistics. No staged performances.

Papua is not "easy travel". It’s remote, unpredictable and deeply rewarding — if you want culture and wilderness without the tourist filter.

See expedition options

For adventurers — not tourists.

Before you read

A clear reality check — so expectations match the ground truth.

Getting there

  • You travel independently to Papua and then to Agats (Ewer).
  • The airport is easiest reached via Timika (route planning depends on your origin).
  • From Agats onward, we take over the logistics.

We’ll share a simple “how to reach Agats” checklist once you request details.

Who this is for

  • Fit adventurers who can handle basic comfort.
  • People who respect communities and want authenticity, not "tribe shows".
  • Travelers who understand that plans can change (weather, boats, timing).

Papua is not for beginners or weak nerves — and we will be honest in the fit-check.

Nabire Whale Sharks (Cenderawasih Bay)

For independent travelers: Nabire can be explored without a guide — but we provide the hard part: transport, contacts, and access to swim with whale sharks in Cenderawasih Bay. This separate Nabire whale shark tour is made for travelers who want the wildlife experience without joining a full Papua expedition.

What we organize

  • Transport Nabire → bay (2–4h)
  • Optional overnight: “abandoned water hotel” (free)
  • Morning boat to whale sharks
  • Return transport to Nabire

Fixed pricing (IDR / USD)

Group Price
1 person 2,000,000 IDR (approx. $120)
2 people 3,500,000 IDR (approx. $207)
3 people 4,500,000 IDR (approx. $266)
4 people 5,000,000 IDR (approx. $300)

Day-by-day overview

This is the "truthful" version: real travel, flexible timing and activities adjusted to conditions and your priorities.

Asmat (5D/4N) — outline

  • Day 1: Arrive Agats (Ewer) · Check-in at Hotel Firwan Jaya · Evening briefing & route finalization.
  • Day 2: Museum visit (Asmat history) · Boat journey (~2.5h) · Wildlife scanning (snakes, birds, possibly crocodiles) · Arrive Warse village · Camp setup in men’s house (by agreement).
  • Day 3: Village life & cultural exchange · Asmat woodcarving session (made for you; buy directly from the makers) · Flexible local activities.
  • Day 4: Return boat journey to Agats · Hotel night.
  • Day 5: Water taxi/boat transfer back to the airport.

We adjust pacing depending on wildlife, weather, village schedules and your focus (culture vs nature vs photography).

Korowai (7D/6N) — outline

  • Day 1: Arrive Agats (Ewer) · Briefing & prep.
  • Day 2: Start transit toward Korowai entry point (via water/overland routes) · Overnight at/near Mabul (entry point).
  • Day 3: Early start · Jungle trek (~5h) to first village area · Cultural exchange · Treehouses where possible.
  • Day 4: Village-based activities (as conditions allow): hunting skills, traps, sago processing, insects, jungle walking.
  • Day 5: Move to another village area (route depends on water level, paths, permissions).
  • Day 6: Return trek to Mabul · Rest & overnight.
  • Day 7: Return to Agats · Transfer out next day if needed.

We do not offer staged "tourist treehouse shows". Our approach is slower and permission-based.

Asmat + Korowai (10D/9N) — combined logic

The first half follows the Asmat 5D/4N structure (Agats + Warse village), then transitions into the Korowai segment (entry point → trekking → villages → return). Exact day allocation depends on river levels, permissions, and your energy — but the overall structure matches the outlines above.

Ethics & authenticity

Papua is sensitive. If we do it, we do it right.

What we do

  • Permission-based, respectful community visits
  • No fake "performances" staged for tourists
  • Honest expectation setting (what you will and won’t see)
  • Direct support: buy carvings from the makers

What we don’t do

  • No "human safari" behavior
  • No paid-up "treehouse theatre" setups
  • No misleading marketing (Papua isn’t a theme park)
  • No pretending communities are "cavemen" — people live normal lives

About the Asmat Cultural Festival

Depending on timing, you may be able to see the annual festival. We can only recommend it conditionally: it can be crowded and sometimes feels "performed for tourists". If your goal is authenticity and calm encounters, we’ll tell you honestly whether the festival fits — or if it’s better to focus on village time and river travel instead.

Included & not included

Very clear boundaries: what starts when you arrive in Agats and what you handle independently.

Included (from Agats onward)

  • Hotel in Agats (Hotel Firwan Jaya)
  • Boats / water taxis / local transport during expedition
  • Village camp nights (by agreement) where applicable
  • Guiding + local contacts + planning
  • Meals & basics during the expedition (where locally available)

Final inclusions may vary slightly by route and conditions — we confirm everything transparently in your itinerary.

Not included (before Agats)

  • International flights and domestic flights to Papua
  • Transport to Agats (Ewer) and related tickets
  • Visa fees
  • Travel insurance
  • Personal gear (sleeping mat, etc. if needed)
  • Tips (optional)

Best for private Papua expeditions

Papua is for travelers who want remote culture, river logistics, jungle routes and real uncertainty, not a staged village visit or a comfortable sightseeing loop.

Asmat expedition

Best for travelers interested in Asmat woodcarving, river travel, village life and a shorter but still remote expedition starting from Agats.

Korowai expedition

Best for fit travelers who want a demanding route toward Korowai areas via Agats, with long days, basic conditions and no staged treehouse theatre.

Asmat plus Korowai

Best for travelers with more time who want the strongest Papua route: Asmat culture first, then a deeper Korowai jungle segment.

Is this a real Papua Expedition or a staged tour?

The route is built around real logistics, local permission and changing conditions. We avoid staged performances and misleading tourist theatre.

Which Papua route should I choose?

Choose Asmat for river culture and woodcarving, Korowai for a harder jungle route, or Asmat plus Korowai if you have more time and want the deepest expedition.

Are Papua Expeditions physically demanding?

Yes. Papua requires flexibility, basic comfort tolerance and good fitness. We use the fit-check to tell you honestly whether the route matches your group.
